Missing dog search in Plymouth

A drone search out of Plymouth, a hilly naval city where the open green of the Hoe sits close against steep streets that fall straight to the water on more than one side.

Streets that climb and fall to the water

Plymouth is built over a series of limestone ridges, so streets rise and fall sharply between the waterfront and the higher suburbs, and unlike a single-river town, this city has water on more than one side, the Sound, the Plym and the Tamar. A dog running downhill from almost anywhere near the city centre can end up at open water fairly quickly, and that is checked early wherever the streets fall steeply towards the Hoe, Sutton Harbour or the Devonport waterfront.

The Hoe, open ground in the middle of a city

Plymouth Hoe is a large area of open grass right against the water in the middle of the built-up city, and open ground like this, surrounded by streets rather than fields, is exactly the kind of terrain a drone clears fast precisely because it stands out so clearly against the built-up ground around it. It is usually one of the first places checked if a dog was last seen anywhere near the waterfront side of the city.

Exposed high suburbs

Away from the sheltered harbour that gave the city its reason to grow here, the exposed high suburbs at Crownhill and Southway take the weather badly, salt-laden south-westerly gales reaching well inland across the ridgelines, and that gets factored into whether and where a flight can go ahead on any given day, since conditions can differ noticeably between the sheltered waterfront and the exposed high ground a couple of miles inland.

From Hoe-side terraces to the estates further out

The surviving Victorian terraces in the Hoe, Stoke and Mutley areas have the usual small yards and back lanes worth checking on foot before the search considers the open ground at the Hoe covered above. The modern waterfront apartments at Royal William Yard and Millbay are a different case: flats without a private garden, so a dog reported missing from one of these addresses has more likely slipped a lead on a walk nearby than wandered off from home.

The extensive post-war estates further out from the centre are a more conventional layout, generally with proper gardens and easier access to whatever open ground survives at the city's edge. Saltash, Ivybridge, Tavistock and Kingsbridge are the nearest towns to widen towards if the search needs to grow beyond the city itself.

Devonport Dockyard and the Barbican around Sutton Harbour are two more distinct kinds of ground within the same city: a secure working dockyard where access itself is the first question, and a dense, historic harbourside with the same close, awkward yards and alleys found in the older parts of several other towns on this list. Both are checked in their own right rather than folded into a general sweep of the waterfront.

Behind the search

What a Plymouth search is actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency, which is what allows closer, faster operation near buildings, hedges and people than the basic category allows.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera. This is the aircraft that goes up first at dawn, dusk and after dark, when a warm body shows against cooling ground.

100 megapixel daylight camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video, for wide daylight coverage of open ground at a resolution that holds up when a distant shape needs checking properly.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. The certificate is available on request, without anyone having to chase for it.
